Paul Botts, son of environmentalist Lee Botts, told a group of campers at the Dunes Learning Center that the facility and the Alliance for the Great Lakes were every bit as much siblings to him as his three by birth.

The alliance, which Lee Botts founded in 1970, hosted a birthday party Aug. 1 at which U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Merrillville, presented a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol.

The Dunes Learning Center was founded by Botts and Visclosky within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Chesterton almost 20 years ago. At the time, it was called the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center.

Botts, 89, who has lived in Gary’s Miller section and Porter County, donated the flag to the learning center, where a counselor and two campers hoisted it to the top of a flagpole outside Cowles Lodge.
