The University of Chicago\u2019s Program on the Global Environment and Doc Films, the university\u2019s student film society, will host the screening, which is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/chicagoemmyonline.org\/\">Chicago\/Midwest Regional Emmy<strong><b>\u00ae<\/b><\/strong> <\/a>nominated documentary chronicles how the Indiana Dunes region, where rare plants grow in the shadows of smokestacks, sparked a movement for a nation to create its first national park in an urban setting; a movement which eventually led to game-changing environmental policies with worldwide impact. Today, the advocacy from that movement has transformed into a new model of cooperation, where industrialists and environmentalists\u2014once bitter adversaries\u2014work together to steer this community toward a more sustainable future.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/114th-congress\/house-bill\/6291\/text\/ih?overview=closed&amp;format=txt\">congressional bill <\/a>is proposed to re-title the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to Indiana Dunes National Park \u2013 bringing Chicago a national park to Chicago\u2019s backyard.<\/p>\n<p>After the screening, Dr. Alison Anastasio, the executive director of the university\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pritzker.uchicago.edu\/page\/mstp-medical-scientist-training-program\">Medical Scientist Training Program<\/a> and lecturer in the <a href=\"http:\/\/pge.uchicago.edu\/\">Environmental Studies Program<\/a>, will lead a discussion with members of the production team. The film\u2019s 2016 release marks 100 years since the creation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/index.htm\">National Park Service<\/a> and 50 years after the congressional authorization of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/indu\/index.htm\">Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore<\/a>. Presented by <a href=\"http:\/\/lakeshorepublicmedia.org\/\">Lakeshore Public Television<\/a> (WYIN) and distributed by <a href=\"http:\/\/aptonline.org\/\">American Public Television<\/a> (APT), \u201c<em>Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability<\/em>\u201d has aired across 240 public television stations since August 2016.
