“Every time I see the lake and the Indiana Dunes, they are breathtaking,” says Lee Botts, a leading environmentalist who has lived in the region for more than six decades. “It’s just so beautiful.”

So beautiful, and so important, Botts says, that the region’s environment is worth preserving and sustaining so that current and future generations can enjoy it. That perspective comes through in abundance in “Shifting Sands: On the Path to Sustainability,” a new documentary that focuses on the region’s history and how the environment has played an integral – though often overlooked – role  in making the region what it is and what it can be.
